Was going to go for a mt. bike ride but didn't have much time so in the end decided to get the road bike have and have a quick blast.

Now, I should point out that the road bike hasn't been out of the shed for 18 years so it was a bit of a shock for it, but I thought it would mean I could have a ride from my house rather than driving to some trails and there would be no need to clean it afterwards.

I headed out from Ynyslas and all felt OK, if a little precarious in comparison to the bikes i've been on recently. Got to the level crossing and there was a train coming so I had to stop and realised than the pedals wouldn't release properly. Luckily they released if I turned my ankles inwards rather than outwards so there was no embarrassing fall.

Then carried on towards Tre-Ddol and turned right onto the main road towards Talybont. The first bit of uphill and I went to change to an easier gear, only to realise that there wasn't one... Since when has 12 gears been enough, and since when has going uphill on a road bike been so difficult!

Into Talybont and it was pouring with rain, is this supposed to be fun? Up another hill and into Bow Street and then turned right towardes Borth only to be pulled out on by a car coming out of the garage... Not only is this hard work, but its downright dangerous. Oh well, dowhill to Borth from here so it should be OK, although I now remembered that when you have 120psi in tiny little tyres you feel every single bump in the road and this road isn't as smooth as it could be. It was all a little uncomfortable to say the least.

Into Borth and then along the straight into the wind and home at last!

I'm sure I used to enjoy this road biking malarky, but that was hard work. Not enough gears, everything felt a little precarious, I wasn't comfortable on the aero bars and the bike was set up for use with the aero bars as it used to be my race bike. Too many cars and I was a little worried that the slightly perished rubber on the 20 year tubs was going to explode. Still. I got around, 15 miles in 50 minutes. Not great but it is good training.

Put the bike back in the shed... Will it be out again or will it sit there for another 18 years before seeing the light of day? We'll see.
